Newb question incoming...

If Xbox 360 reads DVD's that are roughly 4.7g.. and PS3 reads blu-rays that are roughly 30g... Then why does the 360 get more exclusive content? Technically, wouldn't the PS3 be able to make a game that is 6 times as big as its 360 counterpart? Are developers lazy, or what?
I could be totally missing something here.. so help me out. Newb question incoming...
360 games are generally on DVD9s - which is just a single sided dual-layer DVD. So, they can potentially hold 9.4 Gb of information.

Other than that, you pretty much hit the nail on the head.Newb question incoming...
Other than the fact that DVD9 discs contain 9.6 gigs of space (I think), you're right. The thing is, games aren't anywhere NEAR as advanced as they would be to truly surpass that capacity. So far, the only reason PS3 games can't fit on a DVD9 disc is because of redundant data, non-region coding, etc. etc.
It's got nothing to do with being lazy, but games are fine on DVD (atleast for this gen).
Bluray is just a nifty feature that doesn't affect gaming at all, it's unnecesary.

I mean, what would a game cost to develop if it would be 6 times as big as current games?
Look at the PS3 software prices, they're already topping the other 2 console software prices.
i wouldnt say devs are lazy as such. They just havent been able to fill all of the space on either blu ray or DVD9. take mass effect as an example. Or even something like metroid prime, lots of stuff goes into the game, enough stuff in fact. Just because the space is their doesnt mean devs have to fill it.
Devs just seem to think its cool not having to compress their resources and then run around claiming only Blu ray can do it.

i dunno about that crow, it certainly may be topping wii but 360 has a ridiculous attachment rate
Depends on what dev you ask. More space =/= longer games just yet. Devs for PS3 are mostly using it because they don't need to compress anything. Kojima likes it because he doesn't have to compress audio tracks.
Depends on how much memory the game takes up. Uncharted took up almost 30 gigs of space.
I don't think multiplats will fully take advantage of the blu ray disc. DVD9 is still just fine for 360 and PC gaming. And you thought the PS3 hardware was the only problem and makes the devs work harder, longer, and spend more money. It just not good business to spend all that effort making the game more special for blu ray discs if it's multiplat.

[/QUOTE]The PS3 reads Blurays slower than the 360 can read a DVD - so that must have some kind of affect on the loading times (or textures, or whatever).

Well of course DVD9 is fine for PC gaming it's silly if anyone thinks otherwise.

I do agree though that Blu Ray is not necessary for multiplats. If it's an exlcusive and Sony is giving the dev a couple extra bucks then yeah, use blu ray but putting madden on blu ray is just dumb.
FYI, an Xbox 360 DVD can hold a little over 7 GB of data (not all of the area on the DVD9 is usable for X360 games).

As for why Blu-Ray doesn't automatically mean more content, it's because in most cases manpower and resources are the constraining factor on game size (as opposed to disk space). Adding an extra level to a game might only 500 MB of space on a disc, but could cost millions depending on how long it takes, or whether things like voice-acting are needed.

what doesn't make sense is 360 games costing the same as bluray games, when dvd movies are so much cheaper than bluray movies

A game cost $10-15 million to develop. Printing the same game on a DVD might cost 5 cents. Even if you assume it costs 10x as much to print a Blu-Ray disc, you're still only talking about a 45 cent different. Not really worthy of a price break, I don't think.

Well do you think people would even buy games if they were even $5 more than the competition's? It's one thing with movies since many studios release for BR and DVD but with games it's very cut and dry.

Thanks for the responses.. I knew I wasn't crazy. You'd just think that some sony exlclusive developers would pack in extra stuff to sell the whole blu-ray experience. Like a behind the scenes featurette on the Uncharted disc with more crap and whatnot.Or.. they could bundle every single Final Fantasy Game on to one disc when they release the new one coming out. I think a blu-ray oughta hold that much info. I dunno.. just seems like a waste of space.
