I post this in all fairness and humility. In this forum, I have been a very strong critic of this game. Much of my criticism has been aimed at its simple gameplay, small levels, and lack of color. Etc.But now I must come clean and correct my criticism and I feel I owe this to anyone I offended, especially Epic. After a fresh start and an effort to not look into the hype that surrounded this game, it has become quite enjoyable. Yes you heard that correct: Subcritical is doing a 180 and saying that Gears of War is enjoyable. Very enjoyable. I still don't believe it to be 2006 GOTY material, but is does have high production values and is very entertaining. The stratospheric hype for this game was one of the factors that clouded my judgement. I guess sometimes hype is a bad thing. Or a least listening to it....Also, I have scratched playing with the keyboard and mouse and elected to play with the 360 controller plugged into my PC. I tried playing with the controller earlier but gave up prematuraly. After getting used to the controller, as a PC gamer(and solely my opinioin) this game is one of those that is best suited to controller play. Also an even larger factor was that I have turned the brightness up all the way in the options menu. I have never had to do this in a game before (turn the brightness all the way up), but this was huge. What a difference that has made. In my first attempts to play through the game, I had the setting on its default level and even a couple of levels higher, and I couldn't see a damn thing. It was horrible. It was akin to playing cross-eyed. Even though much of the game is dark and more variety would be good, at least now I can see the textures, game/level details, and the damn locust....So, if anybody even cares: I apologize to offending anyone, especially the hardwork of Epic. Although some may still think it is a bad game, everyone is entitled to their gaming preferences and opinions. I think I must be held accountable, and was overly excessive in my criticism. Epic, this is a very good game and I will write my user review praising the game on many fronts. There are still some issue's with the game that I think could of been implemented better, like the choice of some of the save points, or some control issues, but overall the game is good. Not GOTY good. But very good. Gears of War A Third Look: Changes and S ...
so are you the knida guy that will hate something thats popular just to be ''differant''Gears of War A Third Look: Changes and S ...
wow! everyone is in a noble mood today. gears was a game that i liked at first and then started losing touch with it. the last month i had my 360 i didnt touch it. even now i have no desire to play it. thats just me. i liked the game. its like any other game though. if people loved it and thought it was the best game they ever played i wouldnt argue.

No.For example, I never thought Britney Spears had an ounce of musical talent. I didn't come to that conclusion because she was popular.Crysis is popular and I feel it is one of the best FPS games ever.
I had a similar experience, I had heard so much hype that when I did play it I myself wondered what all the fuss was about (not on my own console however so I didn't have much time). Once I got some 1 on 1 time alone with the game I also turned the brightness up and set it to dynamic and all of a sudden I could see what the fuss was about on a visual side. I played it though and found the cover system is actually quite good, and GOW is actually just that, a good game (but hype makes a good game disappointing). I also found online to be a lot more enjoyable than the game itself even with lag sometimes causing a problem, although I prefer the local co op.At the end of the day though it is still only a good game and not the goty title that killed every other game that year, and it obviously won that award based on its graphics.
