in 2005 when it was announced that the Xbox360 would come with a Core SKU that lacked a HDD the fanboys went into overdrive. Lemmings were outraged- ever since the original Xbox they'd been told that a standard HDD allowed much faster loading, much bigger environments %26 the ability to remember every bullet-hole %26 body etc MS were quick to point out that developers could code for a HDD where present but the fanboys werent convinced. so now nearly 3 years on- has the lack of standard HDD really affected the Xbox360? IMO it doesnt look like it- most games seem to take the HDD into account if you have one. if you have a Core then you can play most games allthough the experience isnt always as good. Yes you can install almost whole games onto the PS3 HDD but thats only because BluRay is so slow developers have to allow that too keep loading times down. the Xbox360 has a much faster disk drive so it isnt needed on the 360.Lack of standard HDD really affecting X3 ...

Devs can make it so that the hard drive is used if it's fitted. I believe Oblivion is one game that has used it.

a fast disk drive has nothing to do with it .
Lol who buys a Core anyway.
A hard drive gives you the ability to cache a large amount of data, which can be readily changed during gameplay, whereas a disc simply lets you stream data. This creates problems, you ultimately have to have a decently small amount of saved data (to fit as a save file on the memory card) but you don't have access to large data manipulation during a game.Does this mater?Depends on the game, what you're doing, what you're planning - certain genres become much more limited, with lack of a standard hard drive, and lack of RAM. Interestingly enough though, the lack of a 360 hard drive standard is actually hurting the PS3 as well - multiplat games have to be built with the lowest common denominator in mind.
It does Core owners have to buy a HHD just to play Burnout paradise online
Its a two sided coin. I think they should have made the HDD standard, but I am not sure I like where Sony is allowing Devs to go with it. Optional installs are one thing, as everyone loves options, but to make installs manditory, which is where I think things will eventually go, is absurd. Then console gaming loses its plug-and-play nature, and becomes little more than a gimped PC in almost every sense of the phrase.
I got a hard drive

it has a ati 1800
well it has with devil may cry,in a game that has heaps of loading, you want it to load as quick as possible and ps3 with the standard HD has just made load times so much better, the expereince is a better one on the ps3 because of this.
Not having a HDD as standard is effecting the 360 more than people would think.Developers would have to look into whether or not factoring in HDDs being a 'must have' - to improve performance / allow game design - or limit amount of people who can play the game.

Blu-ray reads at a constant speed across the disc. DVD only reaches it advertised speed at the outer most edge of the disc where it is spinning the fastest. Also keep in mind DVD drives take a huge hit in speed with dual layer discs and another hit in speed with DVD9. That's the technical stuff, here's the proof: Uncharted on PS3, the best game graphically on any console currently. And it has no install and no load times. You can play start to finish without seeing a loading screen. There is one loading screen only and that is when you first start the game.
Burnout Paradise, DMC4, and Lost Odyssey, just to name a few recent ones. Do you think this gets better over time?
Here's what the fakeboys miss........(CwlHeddwyn )So, say that blu-ray speeds do affect the game. HDD is there to fix it. Say the HDD can't help DVD in a way that a larger capacity disc would. Blu-ray is there to help.My point is, find a fault in the PS3 hardware and you'll find another piece of its hardware that helps overcome it. It was good planning.360, on the other hand, doesn't have this luxery. DVD's too small (lost oddyssey), no high capacity disc or standard HDD to overcome. Load times to long on DVD, no HDD to overcome. Not a very well thought out plan by MS.
Microsoft did say they were going to have more HDD optimized games, remember they used to not want devs to make games like that.
SO i expect some of the big games in the coming future to be HDD optimized.
I think it hurt a game like Lost Odyssey, the idiot reviewers so long load times and milked that and its dated combat(because RPGs are so good at combat /sarcasm) just to give the game some pretty low scores.

They only happen between cutscens and boss fights, and even then its only like 3 seconds or 4.
Coming from the guy who thinks reviewers of Lost Oddyssey should have ignored a last gen issue like load times.Load times are annoying. No matter what game or genre you play. We all know that. At least those of us who have been gaming forever.Nothing worse after getting into a pace of a game (no matter what the pace is) and then walking into a door and waiting......waiting......waiting.....waiting.....in the room. Lame.
